Strategies for IELTS Listening Test

In IELTS Listening Test, candidates just listen the audio one time and this is really a difficult challenge. The audio track includes 4 sections: 1,2,3,4 and the instructions before each listening section that you will not see the script in the test. Now, IELTS Sharing Community team will show you some techniques (best IELTS listening tips) in IELTS Listening Test and we hope they work for you. In each section: Before listening, while listening or after listening, we should use the different strategies.

  • Before Listening:

+ You should use audio instructions to predict the situation, vocabulary and possible answers in the audio you are going to listen. Additionally, do not forget to underline keywords in each question as well as information given in the sheets.

+ To help you predict easier, we recommend you should ask yourself these kinds of question: Who are the speaker? Where are the speakers? Why are they talking? What are they talking about?

+ Candidates should identify the topic, common words,…

If you follow these guides you will have advantages to ready to listen to the test.

  • While Listening:

While recordings play, you should focus on the important factor that the answers are heard in the same order as the questions on the question paper. If you listen the answer to question 1, the answer to question 2 will be next and so on.

+You need to be ready to hear the answer and remember that you can not listen again.

+ Listening the words, expressions which mean the same as keywords in the questions. In the IELTS listening, you will not hear the exact same words as the question words.

+ Practicing to be able to read the question and hear the answer at the same time. If you can do this, you will not miss the answer. Firstly, reading ahead of the audio recording (2 questions ahead)

+ Don’t panic if you miss the answer. Marking that question and keep reading the next question.

  • After Listening:

+You should checking answers: followed instructions (Word limit, includes number or figure)? Grammar? spelling? If you want to correct the answer, it’s better to cross the old one and rewrite the new answer without wasting time by using an eraser. If you miss any answers, try to remember the recording and write something reasonably.

+Transferring the answers: Copy the answers from question sheet to answer sheet. There are some common mistakes:

+ Spelling

+ Copying to the wrong question number

+Leaving blank

+ Forgetting to copy answer

Try to practice transferring answer to the answer sheet whenever you can to make sure you do not make these kinds of mistakes.

This is the example of instructions you will hear in the audio:

You’re going to listen to a number of different recordings. You’ll have to answer questions on what you hear. You will have time to read the instructions and questions and to check your work.
